Call for papers / Programme outlines

I. Theme

There’s no time left: Environment, Right, Geopolitics

Recent protests promoted by young and very young people (Fridays for future) have passionately emphasized the need not to waste any more time in dealing with environment- related issues.

The Forum aims to raise the “There’s no time left” alert, enlarging its vision to include also the other emergencies (ethical and economic ones) the planet is facing and that are taking center stage both in terms of analisis and practices.

There’s no time left: we must intervene to prevent an environmental catastrophe.

There’s no time left: we must intervene to prevent the rights’ denial and the disregard for human dignity from prevailing over the positive actions and the infinite human potentialities, which would result in an ethical catastrophe.

There’s no time left: we must build a strategic vision to shape peaceful relations among peoples, countries, religions and cultures, to prevent the geopolitical catastrophe from gathering its clouds on the lives of individuals and communities.

The Forum is by its nature a place for open discussion, where not only different positions on similar issues are compared, but also different problems are addressed through a multidisciplinary approach comparing several branches of knowledge and cultural as well as scientific paradigms.

The call for papers draws the attention on the idea that among the emergencies mentioned in its title there’s actually a very strong interconnection, whose roots lie on the one hand in complexity, meant as a defining character of nowadays reality and its fields of knowledge, on the other in the dispersion of the skills we should face said complexity with, drawing strength from a renewed vision of man and his relationships.

Therefore, despite the scope of the themes involved, they prompt the presentation of papers that may well be specific, born out of the context of practices or researches developed by the participants in their own fields of expertise and subject to acquire a particular meaning in a perspective of comparison and problematic research.

Suggested thematic areas:

The thematic areas suggested here don’t exclude the possibility to propose different themes, approached either on a theoretical level or in terms of data communication, case studies, open problems, possible solutions, historic-cultural profiles of the given issues…

  1. Spaces / Environment / Rights

Between the defiinition of “space” and that of “environment” there’s a subtle connection, insomuch that “right to space” and “right to environment” may become interchangeable terms.

Having a “right to space” means being able to live in a relational condition that’s healthy and fit to develop the human skills, thus in an “environment” that tackles and solves the issues technically known as “environmental issues”, on various levels and on different scopes: pollution, climate, safety in households, study places, workplaces and territory, water and energy-related issues.

Elements that are generally seen as separated from one another, as they require specialized answers, are actually part of a relations’ system that commits us to think about the right to spaces and the right to environment in an integrated way from the perspective of human rights.

As a consequence, topics like “acceptance”, “public spaces management”, “free circulation”, “organization of work and workplaces” have a direct relation with a broad environmental “vision” and require – when dealt with – a strategic view and fundamental choices.

  1. Right to time and to its rhythm

The word “rhythm” has an etymology that probably brings it back to the Greek verb rheo (to flow): so it points at an orderly succession through time of a certain phenomenon or its phases’, thus at time in its several interpretations, as life’ and nature’s essential condition, as the changng of seasons, as a project of generations…

What does “right to time” and to its rhythms mean today and what will it mean tomorrow? What choices will it imply, in terms of organization of work, production and trade, in terms of lives and relationships, in terms of one’s self-consciousness of being on a planet that has physical and moral laws?

  1. Right to information and to science / geopolitics

Science, Information, Vision are tools that on all levels and on different scopes (from micro spae / time to the so-called global one) develop strategies and solutions, engage consciences and found on dialogue perspectives and solutions.

International organisms and simple local realities may fulfill the same function of promoting a multidisciplinary confrontation among science, information, vision.

Which are the key-organisms for a geopolitics that could cross the several levels and the different scopes according to a complex and ethically engaging inspiration? Which are the foundations of thinking and doing?

  1. Historical-cultural profiles, past and present imaginations in arts, literature, photography, cinema; ties between environment and history. Environment’ and space / cities’ anthropology.

II. Participation process

The present call is addressed to young adults aged 18 to 35, without distinction as to nationality.

The Forum works will be conducted both in Italian and in English; simultaneous translation from/to both languages will be provided.

Those who are interested in taking part to the Forum must apply by filling and submitting the online form available on the organization’s website (www.castellodiduinopoesia.org). The use of either English or Italian is required while compiling the form, as well as for any written communication occurring between the interested and the organizers; the organizers don’t guarantee that feedbacks will be given to questions or communications provided in other langages.

For submissions’ deadlines, please check the following paragraphs.

Interested persons may apply either as speakers or as auditors.

        1. Speakers

While filling the application form, those who are interested in applying as speakers must provide a title and an abstract for the paper that, if selected, they’ll have to eventually develop according to the guidelines, in order to present it on the Forum. Thus they must fill all the form’s fields, including those at n. 12 (paper’s title and abstract, geographic details of their travel).

deadline and selection

Application forms must be submitted by Sunday, June 30 July 7, 2019, 11.59 pm (CET). The organizers don’t guarantee that later applications will be taken into consideration.

The selection of speakers will be based upon the assessment of the abstracts (quality level, originality, adherence to the Forum’s theme), the applicants’ profiles, the available budget. Therefore the organization will accept a number of participants based on the actual financial availability, thus reserving the right of rejecting exceeding requests.

It is allowed to present a paper written by 2 or more co-authors; in case such work gets selected, though, the organization’s offer regarding the hospitality and the partial reimbursement for the travel expenses is to be referred to only one author.

The organization will disclose the selection’s results by Sunday, July 14, 2019.

hospitality

The Forum’s organization will provide a 4 nights accommodation (check-in on Sept. 26th, check-out on Sept. 30th). The offer includes lodging in shared rooms + breakfast.

travel and travel costs

The organization will provide the participants with all the necessary assistance regarding the visa release process (if needed) and the hospitality. Selected speakers, on the other hand, are compelled to plan the itinerary and to purchase the travel tickets on their own. The organizers are willing to discuss with the participants, when it comes to travel planning, only those aspects the latter can’t sort out on their own and the doubts that may arise regarding the reimbursement (see next paragraph).

Once the event is over, the organization will offer selected speakers a partial reimbursement – for their travel-related costs – whose amount won’t exceed 70% of the costs related to the considered travel’ sections. Should said 70% exceed 500 €, the amount of the reimbursement won’t anyway exceed that amount (500 €).

The reimbursement is anyway subjected to specific restrictions: particularly, it will be granted only if all the following conditions are met:

1) both on your outbound and inbound journey, the travel’ segments taken into account must outline a path as linear as possible between the place of departure and that of arrival;

2) the place of arrival on the way back must match the place of departure of the way to Trieste. Exceptions may be allowed only in case of serious and substantiated reasons (work, study or residence change);

3) no stop along the way may last longer than 24 hours;

4) in case of international travels:

     a) speakers must arrive to Italy (on their way here) not before September 22;

     b) speakers must leave Italy (on their way back) not after October 4;

5) speakers must present the organization the travel documents (flight, train, bus tickets, boarding passes, etc.) related to the travel’ sections they intend to ask the reimbursement for;

6) speakers must attend all of the Forum’s works; unjustified delays and absences may cause the loss of the right to the reimbursement offer.

NB: in case of flights, the reimbursement will be cut down to 50% of the ticket if the speaker decides to bring checked baggage and this implies a higher fee than the base one.

Reimbursement methods will be as follows:

a) speakers coming from a Sepa area country (or having a bank account based there) will be asked to provide the iban code of a bank account the organizers will make a transfer to, once the forum’s over and upon presentation of the travel documents;

b) for participants not coming from a Sepa area country (nor having a bank account based there), the organizers will deal with each case singularly, according to the speakers’ provenance and in order to find the most practical way to perform the reimbursement (cash, bank transfer, other…).

please note

Interested persons are also advised to start working on their own in order to get a sponsorship in their countries to cover the travel expenditure, and to submit the sponsorship requests as soon as possible, also to allow the Forum organizers to support them as best as they can.

Speakers are asked to mind that, in order to get the reimbursement for the travel expenditure, they must present the organizers the travel documents (tickets, boarding passes, etc.) and they must attend all forum’ sessions.

        1. Auditors

Auditors are allowed to take part to debates and round-table discussions, but without presenting any paper.

Neither hospitality nor travel expenditure reimbursement will be provided for the auditors: it will fall on them, then, to take care not only of the travel solution but also of the lodging’s (reserving a place, if needed, at some accommodation facility they’ll have to find on their own).

So, while filling the application form those who are interested in such role must skip fields n. 12 (paper’s title and abstract, geographic details of their travel) and go straight to field n. 13.

deadline and selection

Application forms must be submitted by Sunday, June 30, 2019, within 11.59 pm (CET). The organizers don’t guarantee that later applications will be taken into consideration.

Due to logistic and practical reasons, the organization probably won’t be able to accept all the requests submitted by prospective auditors. That’s the reason why, also for this role, the organizers will perform a selection, based on the candidates’ background and the verified likelihood of them being actually able to comply with the mentioned terms of participation.

The organization will disclose the selection’s results by Sunday, July 14, 2019.

        1. Organizations

Organizations operating in different fields (youth, volunteering, social sphere, etc.) may take part into the event through the participation of a representants’ delegation. Each delegation may be composed of:

a) only auditors (4 persons max.). In this case, the delegation will stand the auditors’ selection as a whole (meaning: all delegates will be selected or no delegate will not be selected);

b) 1 speaker + up to 3 auditors. In this case, the speaker will stand the speakers’ selection; if his/her paper isn’t selected but the delegation is (among the auditors), he/she will be able to come too but as an auditor (thus without presenting his/her paper).

In any case, organizations must write to the e-mail address dirittodidialogo@gmail.com, providing a list with names and roles of their delegates; the latter are then compelled to confirm their interest by singularly compiling and submitting the application form, mentioning their organization in the field n. 10 (self-description).

Regarding each delegate’s terms of participation, for those who will apply as speakers it remains true what stated in the speakers’ paragraph above, while for those who will apply as auditors it remains true what stated in the auditors’ paragraph above.

III. Visas

As it may take quite some time to get a visa application processed, the organizers are willing to do all that they can to assist the participants during the procedure, providing them with the papers required to support their application.

However, the organization will not incur any costs related to visas release. The organizers, then, won’t consider getting in touch via phone with embassies or consulates on behalf of visa applicants, neither will they contribute to any administrative expense.

So it’s up to the individual applicants to keep in touch with the local authorities in charge of the process. Particularly, each speaker whose paper gets selected is asked to get in touch with the Italian embassy in their country, in order to obtain soon enough the essential informations and the appointment for an interview.

****

IV. Certificates

At the end of the Forum’s works, each participant will receive a certificate of attendance, that may help in obtaining course credits and may be considered as a title of qualification for a resume.

****

V. Publication

The papers selected for the Forum will be eventually included in the booklet handed to participants and eventually published on the website www.castellodiduinopoesia.org, under Creative Commons license. Said papers may also be published in the «Forum’s Magazine», whose firts issue is scheduled for September, upon assessment and acceptance by the scientific committee. Depending on the number of accepted papers, a special issue of the magazine, entirely dedicated to the Forum, may be published.

****

VI. Artistic and cultural events

Cultural events (music performances, poetry readings, meeting with poets and local personalities, exhibitions…) will be the social frame in which the Forum will take place, in order to leave room for creativity and friendship. All those who will take part to the Forum are invited to give their contribution presenting themes, dances, images, instruments or any other element specifically related to their countries and their cultures.

Application Form

(from July 1: for speakers only)

All those who are interested must fill in, either in English or in Italian, the online form available below. Subscriptions presented otherwise won’t be taken into consideration.

As, among the informations required in the form, there’s a self-presentation (500 characters max.) and, only for speakers, title (120 characters max.) and abstract (1500 characters max.) of the paper the candidate intends to present, for practical purposes we strongly advise to prepare such texts in advance, then to check their length and then to copy/paste them into the form.

Within 48 hours after the submission the organization will give each candidate a feedback via mail about the form’s reception.
