CALL FOR PAPERS

I. Theme

Work: histories, cultures, rights

The Forum 2016 focuses on the topic “Work/labor”, considered from different points of view: in the economic perspective, as a function of the productive processes; in the cultural perspective, as a function of a specific way to conceive such processes; finally as human labor: the worker beyond the work. “The work and the city” refers to the general frame of the debate if by “city/citizenship” we mean the whole of the relations between the subjects and the spaces they inhabit (also the work spaces), their potentialities of recognition, rights, values, histories, memories, identities, communities.

All interested are invited to present their own proposals within the suggested fields of discussion, or to present different topics / panels (within the given general theme) bringing their own local experiences, views and inputs from different scientific fields in a transdisciplinary perspective (economics, social sciences, history, psychology, arts, cultural studies, political science… )

The following fields of discussion are suggested:

1) Values

1.1. Goods and values; economic and cultural values; labor force and labor value.

1.2. Discipline and ethics of work (work as “job” and as self-fulfillment, work as happiness).

2) Work between culture of wealth and culture of well-being: needs, histories

“New” jobs: natural and cultural environment. New subjects, new productive processes: saving the Earth, saving identities, saving man and his singularity/subjectivity.

3) “Global” work

Does a global economy exist? Migrant work. Work and “city”. Work and citizenship.

4) New poverties: loss of work

Loss of work: loss of identities, loss of rights, loss of beauty: towards the «bare life»? Loss of life.

II. Participation process

The present call is addressed to young adults aged 18 to 35, without distinction as to nationality.

The Forum works will be conducted both in Italian and in English; simultaneous translation from/to both languages will be provided.

Those who are interested in taking part to the Forum must apply by filling and submitting the online form available on the organization’s website (www.castellodiduinopoesia.org). For submissions’ deadlines, please check the following paragraphs.

Those interested may apply either as speakers or as auditors.

1. Speakers

While filling the application form, those who are interested in applying as speakers must provide a title and an abstract for the paper that, if selected, they’ll have to eventually develop, in order to present it on the Forum. Thus they must fill all the form’s fields, including n. 15 (paper’s title) and n. 16 (paper’s abstract).

IMPORTANT UPDATE (JUNE 27)!

Given the high amount of requests received so far from speakers who need a visa, and given the need to allow them to have the documents required for the visa application process as soon as possible, the deadline to submit the application form (for all speakers, no matter if they need to apply for a visa or not) is anticipated to Sunday, July 3, 2016, within 11.59 pm (CET). The organizers don’t guarantee that later applications will be taken into consideration. The organization will disclose the selection’s results by July 18, 2016.

At the same time, the organization doesn’t guarantee that visa-related documents might be provided to applicant speakers before the selection’s results are disclosed.

selection

The selection of speakers will be based upon the assessment of the abstracts (quality level, originality, adherence to the Forum’s theme), the applicants’ profiles, the available budget. Therefore the organization will accept a number of participants based on the actual financial availability, thus reserving the right of rejecting exceeding requests.

hospitality

The Forum’s organization will provide a 4 nights accommodation (lodging only) for the speakers: check-in will be on September 29th, check-out on October 3rd.

travel costs

Selected speakers are strongly advised to purchase travel tickets on their own, as the organizers don’t guarantee they’ll be able to do so themselves.

However, the organization will contribute to the travel expenditure the speakers will have to bear, upon presentation of the travel documents (flight, train, bus tickets, boarding passes, etc.) by the speakers themselves. The amount of the reimbursement won’t exceed 90% of the expenditure, neither it will exceed, in any case, 400 € per person.

Reimbursement methods will be as follows:

– speakers coming from a Sepa area country (or having a bank account based there) will be asked to provide the iban code of a bank account the organizers will make a transfer to, once the forum’s over and upon presentation of the travel documents;

– for participants not coming from a Sepa area country (nor having a bank account based there), the organizers will deal with each case singularly, according to the speakers’ provenance and in order to find the most practical way to perform the reimbursement (cash, bank transfer, other…).

please note

Participants are asked to deal with the organizers when it comes to plan the travel, in order to find out the less expensive and most suitable solutions.

Interested persons are also advised to start working on their own in order to get a sponsorship in their countries to cover the travel expenditure, and to submit the sponsorship requests as soon as possible, also to allow the Forum organizers to support them as best as they can.

Then, once again, speakers are asked to mind that, in order to get the reimbursement for the travel expenditure, they must present the organizers the travel documents (tickets, boarding passes, etc.).

2. Auditors

Auditors (individuals or delegations) are allowed to take part to debates and round-table discussions, but without presenting any paper. So, while filling the application form those who are interested in such role must skip fields n. 15 (paper’s title) and 16 (paper’s abstract).

Neither hospitality nor travel expenditure reimbursement will be provided for the auditors.

Application forms must be submitted by Sunday, August 7, 2016, within 11.59 pm (CET).

IMPORTANT UPDATE (JUNE 27)!

The applications we’ve received so far from auditors who need a visa outnumber by far the amount of rooms we have at our disposal. Therefore, we regret to inform that unfortunately we can’t process anymore participation requests from applicants in such position, as we couldn’t supply them with the accommodation booking they’d require to file their visa applications.

III. Visas

As it may take quite some time to get a visa application processed, the organizers are willing to do  all that they can to support the participants during the procedure. All candidates whose paper get accepted are asked to contact immediately the Italian embassy in their country, in order to obtain soon enough the essential informations and the appointment for an interview.

The organization will not incur any costs in connection to visas release.

IV. Certificates

At the end of the Forum’s works, each participant will receive a certificate of attendance, that may help in obtaining course credits and may be considered as a title of qualification for a resume.

V. Publication

During the Forum’s works a volume containing the proceedings of 2014 and 2015 editions will be presented. It will be available for free (except for shipping costs) to those who took part in those editions; participants to the 2016 edition may also get a copy of it on a voluntary donation basis.

A selection of the papers presented at the Forum (the organizers will have the final and unquestionable decision on the choice, based on the works’ originality and scientific standards) will eventually be published among the proceedings of the event. All papers, on the other hand, will be published on www.castellodiduinopoesia.org.

VI. Artistic and cultural events

The volume containing the works from the International Poetry and Theater Competition «Castello di Duino» 2016 will be also presented to the forum’s audience.

Cultural events (music performances, poetry readings, meeting with poets and local personalities, exhibitions…) will e social frame in which the Forum will take place, in order to leave room for creativity and friendship. All those who will take part to the Forum are invited to give their contribution presenting themes, dances, images, instruments or any other element specifically related to their countries and their cultures.
